What is an Independent Sales Organisation (ISO)?

An Independent Sales Organisation (ISO) is a third party company, partnered with payment service providers to enable businesses to accept credit, debit cards and other payments. Even though they are not banks, ISOs play a key role in the payment processing ecosystem. While ISOs operate independently, they have partnerships with acquiring banks and payment gateways, enabling them to connect merchants with payment processing solutions. ISOs assist merchants by setting up payment systems, offering customer support and helping to manage their payment operations.

What is a Payment Facilitator (PF)?

Payment Facilitators (PFs) are sometimes referenced as a PayFac, they are companies that improve the acceptance of electronic payments, often on behalf of smaller merchants. Instead of individual business setting up its own merchant account with an acquirer or acquiring bank, the Payment Facilitator acts as a main/master merchant account holder and allows sub-merchants to process payments under its account.

Payment Facilitators handle compliance, risk management and security measures on behalf of the sub-merchants. All of this streamlines onboarding making it faster or businesses to accept card payments.

What is an Independent Software Vendors (ISV)?

An Independent Software Vendor (ISV) develops, sells and supports software solutions that operate and integrate on multiple platforms, such as payments, operating systems, hardware or cloud, but is usually independent of the platform provider. ISVs create specialised software including plugins, integration tools and management.

While ISVs tend to on software usually underlying infrastructure is owned or provided by another provider, differing to companies that provide hardware and software portals.
